It’s one of the most common questions I get from directors trying to build a sustainable career:

Should I niche down, or should I try to stay broad to get more opportunities?

And while there isn’t a one-size-fits-all answer, let me start with the hard truth: broad is not the same as versatile. And niche is not the same as “limiting.” Let’s break this down.

The Danger of Staying Broad

Many directors think casting a wide net will bring them more work. They say things like: “I can do beauty, docu-style, comedy, fashion, food & beverage… and basically, anything you need.”

While that might sound impressive and accommodating, it’s often a red flag.
